eSIM or SIM card for Poland: how to stay online without roaming bills
Whether you need anything at all depends on where your phone contract comes from. Here is the quickest way to stay online in Poland – and avoid a roaming bill when you get home.
The quick answer
| Your phone contract is from… | Best option |
|---|---|
| An EU or EEA country | Nothing to do – “roam like at home” applies in Poland |
| The UK | Check your tariff: many UK networks now charge a daily EU roaming fee. For a longer trip, a travel eSIM is often cheaper |
| The US, Canada, Australia and elsewhere | A travel eSIM (easiest) or a Polish prepaid SIM (cheapest for longer stays) |
| Staying for months | A Polish prepaid or monthly plan, registered with your passport |
Coming from the EU: roam like at home
If your SIM is from an EU or EEA country, you can use your normal minutes, texts and data in Poland at no extra cost, under the EU's roam-like-at-home rules. A fair-use limit may apply to data on some plans – check with your operator if you plan to stream a lot.
Coming from the UK: check your daily charge
Since Brexit, most UK networks have reintroduced roaming charges in the EU. Typical arrangements in 2026:
| Network | EU roaming |
|---|---|
| EE | about £2.47 a day with a Roam Abroad pass |
| O2 | about £3.50 a day on many tariffs |
| Vodafone | about £2 a day |
| Three | free on Advanced plans, about £2 a day on Essential |
| giffgaff, SMARTY, Sky Mobile | EU roaming included within limits |
For a weekend that is fine. For a week or more, a travel eSIM usually costs less than paying the daily fee. Tariffs change – check your own network's current terms before you go.
Travel eSIMs: the easiest option
An eSIM is a digital SIM you download to your phone. You buy a data plan online before you travel, install it by scanning a QR code, and switch it on when you land – no shop, no registration in Poland.
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Most recent iPhones and many Android phones do.
- Choose by data, not days. A few gigabytes are enough for maps, messaging and occasional browsing on a city break; buy more if you use your phone as a hotspot.
- Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Keep your normal SIM active for calls and texts (or use WhatsApp and similar apps).
- Install it before you travel, while you are on Wi-Fi, and turn it on when you arrive.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid accidental charges.
There are many providers; compare price per gigabyte, validity and whether the plan uses a Polish network directly. Airalo is one of the biggest, with plans for Poland alone or for the whole of Europe if you are travelling on.
A Polish prepaid SIM: cheapest for longer stays
Poland's four main networks are Play, Orange, Plus and T-Mobile, plus cheaper sub-brands such as Heyah, nju and tuBiedronka. Prepaid starters (starter na kartę) cost only a few złoty and often include several gigabytes of data.
What to know:
- Registration is mandatory. You can buy a starter without ID, but it will not work until it is registered with your passport or EU ID card.
- Register in person. Visitors cannot use the online registration (it needs a Polish ID app or bank account). The safest place to buy and register is an operator's own shop – kiosks often sell SIMs but cannot register them.
- Where to buy: operator shops in shopping centres and city centres, and some Żabka convenience stores and post offices.
- eSIM versions of Polish prepaid SIMs exist on some networks, but usually after you have registered in a shop.
Wi-Fi in Poland
Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés, restaurants, shopping centres, airports and on many long-distance trains, and some cities have public hotspots in the centre. Avoid logging in to your bank on open networks.
