Why it is worth it
Salt was mined in Wieliczka from the 13th century until 1996, and for centuries it was one of the richest businesses in the Polish kingdom. Generations of miners left behind a maze of more than 2,000 chambers on nine levels – and they carved many of them into chapels, statues and monuments, all from rock salt.
The highlight is St Kinga's Chapel, a church the size of a ballroom where everything – the altar, the reliefs on the walls, even the chandeliers – is made of salt. Add underground lakes, huge timber-braced caverns and the stories of the miners and their horses, and it is easy to see why Wieliczka was on the very first UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978.
Which route? Tourist Route vs Miners' Route
| Tourist Route | Miners' Route | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The classic guided tour of the most beautiful chambers, chapels and lakes | A hands-on tour in helmets and lamps, doing simple mining tasks |
| Length | 3.5 km, down to 135 m | 1.9 km, down to 101 m |
| Time | 2–3 hours, including the underground museum | 2–3 hours |
| Languages | English at least once an hour; other languages daily | Polish and English at set times |
| Age | All ages; children under 4 free | 10 and over |
| Best for | First-time visitors, families, anyone short on time | Return visitors, older children and teenagers, anyone who wants adventure rather than sightseeing |
Most visitors choose the Tourist Route – it is the one with St Kinga's Chapel and the most impressive chambers.

Where to buy
- Online on the official website – the cheapest way to secure a time slot. You choose the language and the tour time.
- At the ticket machines or ticket office at the Daniłowicz Shaft, if there are places left. In July and August and at weekends, English tours are often sold out on the day.
- As a tour from Kraków – transport from your hotel, a skip-the-line ticket and a guide in one booking. It costs more than going on your own, but saves organising, and is useful if you are short on time or travelling with older relatives. Booking platforms such as Klook sell these tours with free cancellation on many dates.
How to get there from Kraków
| Time | Price | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | 20–25 min | a few złoty | Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, the last stop; then a 5–10 minute walk |
| Bus 304 | 40–50 min | city ticket for zones I+II | From near Galeria Krakowska to the Wieliczka Kopalnia Soli stop |
| Uber / Bolt | 25–40 min | price shown in the app | Depends on traffic |
| Organised tour | – | more than going on your own | Pick-up from your hotel, ticket included |
The train is the easiest way: Koleje Małopolskie trains leave from Kraków Główny (the main station next to the Old Town) and run frequently through the day. Buy your ticket from the machine on the platform or on board. From Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia station, follow the signs uphill to the Daniłowicz Shaft (Szyb Daniłowicza), where tours start.
By bus 304, buy a ticket valid for zones I and II and validate it as soon as you board. See also our guide to taxis and apps in Poland.
What to expect on the tour
- The way down: you walk down about 380 wooden steps to the first level, 64 metres underground.
- The route: a guided walk of about 2 hours through chambers, chapels and corridors, going gradually deeper. There are more stairs along the way – around 800 in total – but nearly all of them go down.
- St Kinga's Chapel, the underground lakes and the vast Stanisław Staszic Chamber are the highlights.
- The museum: the ticket includes the underground exhibition of the Kraków Saltworks Museum, which adds up to an hour.
- The way up: a fast miners' lift brings you back to the surface from 135 metres. There can be a short queue.
There are toilets along the route, and an underground restaurant and shops near the end. There is no mobile signal underground.
Practical tips
- Book a morning slot. The 9:00 and 10:00 tours are usually less crowded, before the tour buses arrive.
- Wear comfortable, closed shoes. Floors can be uneven and slightly damp.
- Bring a layer. It is around 17 °C underground all year – chilly in summer clothes, warm in winter coats.
- Travel light. Only small bags (up to 20 × 20 × 35 cm) are allowed; bigger bags go into the free left-luggage room or lockers at the entrance. Coming straight from the airport or after checking out? Leave your suitcase at a luggage storage point in Kraków instead.
- Pushchairs: only small folding ones are allowed, and there is nowhere to leave them underground – a baby carrier is easier.
- Photography is allowed on most of the route. Drones are not.
- Greet your guide like a miner: Szczęść Boże! is the traditional miners' greeting.
Combining Wieliczka with other trips
- Kraków Old Town: the easiest plan – Wieliczka in the morning, back in Kraków for lunch.
- Auschwitz-Birkenau: many tour companies sell both in one day. It is possible, but it makes for a very long and emotionally heavy day; if you have the time, visit them on separate days.
- Bochnia Salt Mine: the older, quieter sister mine, about 40 km east of Kraków, part of the same UNESCO site – good for a second salt mine or a family day out.
If you are visiting in winter, our guide to Kraków in December has the Christmas market dates – the mine is a good plan for a cold or rainy day.
