Kraków in December: Christmas market, weather and what to pack

December is one of the most atmospheric times to be in Kraków – the Main Square fills with stalls and lights, and the city's famous nativity scenes go on show. Here is what to expect.

The Christmas market on the Main Square

Kraków's Christmas market fills the Main Square from late November until Epiphany. In 2026 it is scheduled to run from 27 November to 6 January 2027. Wooden stalls sell mulled wine (grzaniec), grilled oscypek cheese with cranberry, pierogi, sausages and gingerbread, alongside glass ornaments, wooden toys, wool and leather goods. A big Christmas tree stands by St Mary's Basilica, and there is usually a stage with carols and folk music at weekends.

Tips:

  • Go at dusk. The market is at its most beautiful when the lights come on – which in December means around 4 pm.
  • Weekday mornings are calmest. Weekend evenings get very busy.
  • Compare before you buy. Some stalls sell mass-produced souvenirs; look for hand-painted glass, real Bolesławiec pottery and local crafts. Our guide to souvenirs from Poland explains what is worth buying.
  • Most stalls take cards, but a little cash is handy for snacks.

The nativity scene contest (szopki)

Kraków's glittering nativity scenes – szopki krakowskie – are one of the city's most original traditions and are on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. They are tall, colourful models of Kraków's churches and towers, made of cardboard, foil and tinsel, with the nativity at their heart.

Every year, on the first Thursday of December, makers carry their szopki to the Main Square, where they are displayed around the monument area before being judged. In 2026 that is Thursday 3 December. The winning scenes are then exhibited at the Krzysztofory Palace (Museum of Kraków) on the Main Square, usually from around 8 December into the new year.

December weather

December in Kraków is cold, often grey and sometimes snowy. Average daytime highs are around 3 °C, with nights a few degrees below freezing. Snow is common at some point in the month, but a white Christmas is never guaranteed. The bigger surprise for many visitors is how short the days are: it gets dark by mid-afternoon.

What to pack

  • A warm, windproof coat, hat, scarf and gloves
  • Waterproof boots with a good grip – cobblestones can be icy
  • Warm layers for long evenings outside at the market
  • Something comfortable for indoors: museums, cafés and restaurants are well heated

Christmas opening hours

Christmas in Poland is a family holiday, and the city slows down:

  • 24 December (Christmas Eve) is a public holiday. Shops are closed, and many restaurants close in the afternoon.
  • 25 and 26 December are public holidays too. Most shops are closed; some restaurants and cafés in the Old Town stay open, but book ahead.
  • Museums and attractions often close or shorten their hours between 24 and 26 December and on 1 January. Check before you go.
  • Shopping: most shops are closed on Sundays in Poland, but 6, 13 and 20 December 2026 are trading Sundays. Do your shopping before 24 December.

What else to do in Kraków in December

  • Wawel Castle and Cathedral – beautiful under snow, and less crowded than in summer.
  • Wieliczka Salt Mine – the underground chapels stay at a steady temperature all year, a good plan for a freezing day.
  • Kazimierz – the old Jewish quarter is full of cosy cafés and bars for long dark evenings.
  • Midnight Mass (Pasterka) on 24 December – St Mary's Basilica and many other churches are packed; arrive early.
  • New Year's Eve – crowds gather on the Main Square at midnight; check the city's programme for events.
  • Warm up cheaply in a traditional milk bar – Milk Bar Crawl has a map of Kraków's best.
