Wrocław Christmas market 2026: dates, opening hours and what not to miss

Every winter Wrocław's Market Square turns into a fairy-tale village of wooden huts, glittering lights and steaming mugs of mulled wine. It is often called the most beautiful Christmas market in Poland – and it runs longer than almost any other.

Wrocław does Christmas properly. The city's vast Market Square, ringed by pastel merchant houses and the Gothic town hall, fills with more than a hundred decorated stalls; the market spills along Świdnicka Street and into Plac Solny, the old salt market, and the whole centre glows from late afternoon. Families come for the carousels and the fairy-tale figures, everyone else for the food, the crafts and the city's famous mulled wine.

What to see

  • The Market Square – the heart of the market, with stalls on all four sides of the square, a big Christmas tree and the illuminated town hall.
  • Fairy-tale decorations and carousels – a favourite with children, alongside the city's famous bronze gnomes (krasnale), hundreds of which hide around the Old Town all year.
  • Local producers – a rotating section of stalls on the west side of the square sells food, crafts and gifts from Lower Silesian makers.
  • Plac Solny and Świdnicka Street – quieter, with more crafts and decorations.

What to eat and drink

  • Mulled wine (grzane wino), traditionally served in a souvenir mug in the shape of a boot that you can take home – or return for your deposit.
  • Mead (miód pitny), honey liqueur and hot chocolate.
  • Grilled sausages, pierogi and oscypek (smoked highland cheese with cranberry).
  • Gingerbread and sweets from all over Europe – crêpes, chimney cakes and more.

Prefer a sit-down meal at local prices? Wrocław has some excellent traditional milk bars a short walk from the square.

Tips for visiting

  • Go on a weekday afternoon – weekends, especially in December, are very crowded.
  • Arrive at dusk (around 15:30–16:00) to see the lights come on.
  • Bring cash and cards – most stalls take cards, but small craft stalls may prefer cash. See our guide to Polish currency, cards and ATMs.
  • Dress warmly: December evenings are often around freezing. See weather in Poland.
  • Shops close over Christmas: 24–26 December are public holidays; see public holidays in Poland.

Getting there

Wrocław Główny station is about a 15-minute walk or a short tram ride from the Market Square. Wrocław Airport is about 30 minutes away by bus or taxi; from Germany, Wrocław is around three hours by car from Dresden or Berlin.
